The conversation between the handset and the cell site is a stream of digital data that includes digitized audio (except for the first generation analog networks).
The technology or the know-how that achieves this depends on the system that the cell phone operator has adopted. A number of technologies include AMPS for analog, and TDMA, CDMA, GSM, GPRS, EV-DO, and UMTS for digital communications.

The following are a few tips to help you keep your mobile phone safe:-
1. Your mobile can be registered at www.immobilise.com. You should register your mobile phone on this site which can them record the item as lost or stolen and this appears on the Police National Stolen Equipment Database. You should also report it to your network to enable them to block the SIM card and the IMEI number.
2. When not using your phone, keep it out of sight either in a handbag or a pocket. Thieves are not tempted with items they cannot see.
3. If you phone has a security lock code, use it.
4. Record your electronic serial number (ESN) in your home records.
5. If you phone has the unique indentifier number for your phone (IMEI) record this with the ESN. You can find this out by typiung *#06# into your handset and a 15 digit number will be displayed.
6. Mark your phone with your post code and house number to help it to be identified by the police when recovered.
7. If you lose your phone or have it stolen, report it to the police immediately.
8. Ensure you tell your network provider that you phone has been lost or stolen.
9. Try not to attract attention to your phone when carrying or using it in a public place.
10. Do not leave your phone unattended in a car. A thief can break into your car and steal your phone within a couple of seconds.
